Mr Smith " In what ways have the improvements in hardware and content affected institutions and audiences"

Th Blu ray disc was released in 2006 and these are the improvements in hardware it has compared to the DVD. Blu ray's maximum resolution is 1080p while DVD is limited to 480p. This means that you will see more of a detailed image, and see things clearer as well as the sound quality being improved. Blu ray is the highest quality video format available on the market. A Blu ray disc can hold up to 50GB of information while a DVD can only hold 8GB, This is good for Blu ray because it can fit more things onto one disc. Blu ray also has special features such as "BD-Live" this allows the user to connect to the internet and access extra content for the Blu ray such as additional deleted scenes, outtakes, trailers. Also with a DVD there is a short pause when the disc reader will switch from the first layer to the second, on Blu ray this short pause does not occur. The only downside to Blu ray is that it costs slightly more than a DVD but some people would prefer to watch in the film in a better quality and pay a little extra. This has affected institutions and audiences because more people would buy a Blu ray home cinema set and watch the movies at home because the quality of the picture and sound would be better, than going to the cinema.

Another improvement to hardware is movie streaming. This is where the user can stream movies from any device that can connect to the internet. For example, a gaming console is now compatible with Netflix a movie streaming website so that the user can watch films on their games console.
This affects the institutions and audiences because people would find it easier to watch films at home than traveling to the cinema. The film makers will not be losing out on money because they would sell the movie to a streaming site or a movie channel such as Sky Movies, this is a synergy and convergence between Sky Movies and Film Makers.  In some cases this would boost the sales for both the film makers and Sky movies, for example After earth was released on sky movies before it came out on Blu ray or DVD, so this would encourage people to watch it on Sky Movies.

Due to more people watching films at home and not watching them at the cinema, the affect cinemas was that they were forced to converge with orange and do special deals, for example Orange Wednesdays. This is great for both company's as it is a good promotional tool, the cinema could show Orange adverts before the film.

In conclusion the improvements in hardware and content are affecting institutions and audiences to watch films in their homes rather than go to the cinema.

Mr Smith: Why Dredd failed at the Box Office.

Dredd (2012)

In this essay i will be explaining why the latest film about dredd failed at the box office.
Dredd failed in the box office for many reasons:
  • They made it into 3D. People were put off by paying more at the cinema for 3D.
  • The original film dredd, was awful, didn't stick to the comic took mask off .
  • The comic was released in U.K not U.S
  • Although the new Dredd didn't take off his helmet, American audiences didn't like that they never seen his face.
  • The success of avengers set the standards high for other superhero films.
  • Dredd was an R-rated film. Only appealed to one out of the four quadrants.
Dredd was made into a 3D film which was a huge mistake. Firstly 3D effects cost A LOT. Most of the budget for Dredd was spent on 3D alone, which when the movie itself could have been improved was a mistake In my opinion instead of Dredd spending most of their budget on 3D they should have invested it into getting an American a list star to play the role of Anderson, for obvious reasons it would have been pointless getting an a list star to play Dredd as he never take his helmet off. Secondly the cost of a 3D ticket is a lot more than a normal ticket, which put a lot of people off the film.In the U.k 2D tickets were available to purchase.

In the original film Dredd, starring Silvester Stallone, didn't stay true to the comic books. In the comic books Judge Dredd did not take off his helmet under any circumstances, but in the original he did.The original was focusing more on the actor not the character itself. The comic was released in the U.K and only the U.K only, so why the original dredd was made into a U.S movie was a ridiculous idea because the U.S did not know who Judge Dredd was. However the new dredd did stay true to the comic in regards to keeping the helmet on at all times, which the American audience didn't like. In my opinion Dredd should have been an English film with elements of American in it, e.g. A recognized American actor. Although the reputation of the name Dredd has been tainted with the original, this could have made people reconsider about Dredd.

Another reason why Dredd failed at the box office was because it was released close to the avengers, this made people choose between the two, and with the ticket prices being higher for Dredd because of 3D more people went to see The Avengers which was a huge hit. In comparison to the avengers, everything was trailing behind. The budget for avengers was bigger, they had more A-list stars and it wasn't just one superhero it had 6! So the avengers has set the bar pretty high for superhero films.

Finally in my opinion was the biggest reason for the failure of dredd at the box office was because they made it into an R-rated movie (U.K equivalent is an 18). This was a huge mistake because they are only focusing on one of the four quadrants. This film stereotypically is for males, so they have already lost the views of women, and the film is not suitable for young teenagers, 13 year old, as it is an R-rated film. Although this might appeal to them, they would not be allowed in the cinema to watch it due to the violence in it. In my opinion the way that they could have drawn in more of an audience is to tone down the violence so that its a 15 rating, then add elements of romance in the film to attract females to watch the film. The film did still appeal to the nerdy audience however they could have been put off by the original film. The film reviews could have also been a factor in dredd failing at the box office, as the standards were set high from the avengers.

Mrs Hammond Dining Scene Analysis

In this essay i will be discussing the mise on scene (Everything on scene) for the dining scene from the movie American Beauty, the one which Lester throws the dish at the wall.

Firstly i will talk about the lighting. The lighting for the dining scene is mainly lit by candle light. This connotes that it was a romantic dinner, and creates an atmosphere of romance, and a dark background slightly lit by background lighting is to put the focus is on the dinner table and characters.

Next, is props. The props which stood out were the candles on the table, this connotes again a romantic theme to the scene. The table was set out nicely which still goes with the romantic theme. On the left side, which Carolyn was sitting at there (what looks like) a glass of wine which is classy, and again goes with the theme of a romantic dinner. But on the other side however Lester is drinking a bottle of beer, this doesn't really flow with the classy, romantic dinner.

Carolyn, Carolyn is at the table sitting up straight so from this i connote that she is classy/cares about how she is perceived. Also her wrists are not touching the table which also connotes that shes classy. However Lester is the opposite of Carolyn, he is hunched over his dinner, with one hand on his fork and one hand on his beer. This connotes that he's a bit of a slob. Then we see that Jane comes to the dinner table, therefore ruining the whole romantic atmosphere and turning it into a family meal. Carolyn for most of this scene is smiling, being sarcastic, this connotes that's she likes to be in charge and enjoys criticising others.  Jane comes in with an emotionless expression on her face, i would connote that she didn't enjoy the "Traditional" family meal. When Carolyn was being patronising and belittling Lester in front of Jane. Lester's response wasn't to defend himself or ask her to stop he asked her to pass the asparagus, which defiantly seems like he doesn't care what anyone else thinks of him apart from him. At the start of the scene, Carolyn was the one in charge, doing most of the talking/nagging, with the loudest voice. But towards the end of the scene it flips over to Lester being the leader of the conversation, and being the dominant one throwing the plate at the wall in order to gain dominance, also to get a say in the conversation that Carolyn was having. Lester throughout the scene remained calm, even though his actions seem dramatic and in anger. Jane was quiet throughout this scene.

The costume which Carolyn was wearing was formal, this still goes along with the idea that she is a classy person and cares about how people perceive her. Carolyn looks like she is wearing heels, at her own dinner table. This connotes that she always likes to look her best and again cares about how she is being perceived. Lester's costume is a very casual costume, an open buttoned shirt with a white t-shirt and jeans, this still goes with how he is being perceived as a slob. Jane is also very casual, hair tied back, wearing a baggy wooly jumper which connotes that she would rather be comfortable than look good. Jane is sitting up straight but is wearing comfortable clothes, which connotes that she is taking habits from both parents.
